Koala is an innovative startup working to digitize, democratize, and decentralize the energy market.

We are building a platform that makes access to the sector simple and transparent. The entry point is a single interface where, through a unique digital identity, users can access all services without having to repeat onboarding processes or administrative procedures. Around this core, we are developing a range of service modules: energy-related administrative processes for professionals, the management of Renewable Energy Communities (RECs), and the digitalization of energy services for municipalities. On this foundation, we are developing the three products that represent the company’s core bet: Trade, the direct buying and selling of energy between small-scale producers and consumers; Flex, the aggregation of distributed energy resources across the territory and their valorization toward grid operators, with Koala acting as a Balance Service Provider; and Crowd, a model of community ownership in energy assets. Together, these products aim to balance supply and demand within our ecosystem, progressively reducing its reliance on centralized markets.

We are a young and flexible startup, with a distributed team and up to 100% remote working. Our operational offices are located in Benevento, Avellino, Salerno, and Turin. 1- Junior Energy Specialist

Design self-consumption and energy-sharing configurations — from the initial feasibility study to the project going live — and help turn a hands-on consulting approach into a scalable digital service.

What you’ll do

• Design energy configurations from both a technical and economic perspective: system sizing, production and consumption estimates, energy-sharing simulations, benefit calculations, and payback periods.
• Develop feasibility studies and scenario analyses, assessing applicable incentives and the different project alternatives on the table.
• Provide specialized technical support to clients, professionals, and public administrations on self-consumption, energy sharing, and energy efficiency.
• Manage the administrative processes related to projects: grid connection requests, regulatory requirements, and submissions through institutional portals.
• Keep up to date with regulations and incentive mechanisms, ensuring that the models and assumptions we use for project design are always current.
• Support applications for regional, national, and European grants and funding programs.
• Bring field experience into our digital services: identify what is repetitive, what can be automated, and what is missing.

Who we’re looking for

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Energy Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or Management Engineering. We are also open to candidates with an economics background and a specialization in the energy sector.
• 0–2 years of experience: internships and applied thesis projects count. If you have the right foundations and the drive to grow, we’ll build the rest together.
• Knowledge of the fundamentals of the energy sector: photovoltaics, energy storage systems, self-consumption, energy communities, and the main incentive mechanisms.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and modeling skills, with an eye for detail when the numbers really need to add up.
• Excellent command of Excel; familiarity with energy simulation and design tools is a strong plus.
• A digital mindset: you’re comfortable learning new tools and get frustrated doing manually what a machine could do on its own.
• Strong interpersonal skills, good command of English, and “cazzimma” — the grit, resourcefulness, and determination to get things done.

2- Junior Account Manager

You’ll be the first point of contact between Koala and those entering our ecosystem: consumers, professionals, energy communities, and municipalities. You’ll build relationships, close deals, and remain the client’s go-to person over time.

What you’ll do

• Manage the full sales cycle across our target segments: lead qualification, first contact, platform demos, commercial proposals, and closing.
• Develop new outbound opportunities by leveraging our existing databases of professionals, public administrations, and energy communities, while continuously building new ones.
• Present our technical offering in a clear and accessible way: what the platform does, what economic benefits a given configuration can generate, and what it concretely changes for the customer.
• Support customers after signing: onboarding, product adoption, renewals, and upselling.
• Manage the CRM pipeline, ensuring clean data and reliable forecasts.
• Represent Koala at events, trade fairs, and meetings across the territory.
• Bring real market feedback back to the product team: you’ll be the first to hear what the market is actually asking for.

Who we’re looking for

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Management Engineering, Economics, Management, or a related field.
• 0–2 years of experience in sales, business development, or customer success roles; internships, student associations, and entrepreneurial activities count.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills: much of the job involves explaining complex concepts to people who are unfamiliar with them, without oversimplifying them inaccurately.
• Curiosity about the energy sector and a willingness to master its language: we can teach you the technical side, but we can’t teach genuine interest.
• Familiarity with CRM systems and digital sales tools, with a data-driven approach to pipeline management.
• Autonomy, strong organizational skills, and a strong results-oriented mindset; a valid driving licence and willingness to travel are required.

3- Junior Researcher — P2P Energy Trading & Flexibility

Trade and Flex are not features to be defined in a product meeting: first and foremost, they are research problems. You’ll work on the market mechanisms and algorithms that enable small-scale producers and consumers to trade energy with each other, and distributed energy resources to provide flexibility to the grid.

What you’ll do

• Design, develop, and test algorithms and market mechanisms for peer-to-peer energy trading: matching, clearing, and pricing within local energy communities.
• Model flexibility markets — demand response, energy storage dispatch, electric vehicle charging, and other distributed resources — for balancing, congestion management, and ancillary services.
• Model distributed generation and consumption resources and develop forecasts using machine learning and deep learning techniques: here, accuracy translates into margin and imbalance risk, not just an academic metric.
• Implement and evaluate algorithms through simulations and real-world data from energy communities and grid operators, assessing their robustness, scalability, and fairness.
• Collaborate with the development team to integrate the designed mechanisms into the platform.
• Stay up to date with the state of the art in game theory, mechanism design, operations research, and machine learning, and produce technical reports, white papers, and, where appropriate, academic publications.

Who we’re looking for

• Master’s degree (or ongoing/completed PhD) in Energy Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Mathematical Engineering, Computer Science, Operations Research, Economics, or a related quantitative discipline.
• Strong foundations in optimization, mathematical modeling, and/or machine learning; thesis work and research experience count as relevant experience.
• Strong programming skills in Python (NumPy, SciPy, Pandas, scikit-learn) or MATLAB; experience with optimization solvers (Gurobi, CPLEX, or open-source alternatives) is a plus.
• Interest in electricity markets, distributed energy resources, smart grids, and energy communities; previous experience in the field is a significant advantage.
• Ability to communicate complex concepts clearly, including to non-technical stakeholders.
• Excellent command of English and “cazzimma”: the intellectual tenacity to push beyond the boundaries of what has already been solved.

4- Full Stack Developer

Build the platform that everything runs on: the interface through which people enter the Koala ecosystem, the service modules for professionals, energy communities, and municipalities, and the APIs that tie everything together.

What you’ll do

• Develop the frontend and backend of the platform’s modules, from interface design to the APIs that power them.
• Design and maintain data models and services for digital identity, delegated access, energy configuration management, and the related document workflows.
• Integrate external data sources and services: institutional portals, metering data, payment systems, and identity services.
• Write tested, maintainable code, participate in code reviews, and contribute to CI/CD pipelines and monitoring.
• Contribute to technical and architectural decisions together with the product team: here, you don’t just execute a specification — you help write it.
• Automate processes that are currently done manually — in our case, this isn’t just a technical preference; it is literally our business model.

Who we’re looking for

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematical Engineering, or a related field; we also consider candidates without a traditional academic background if they have a strong portfolio.
• 0–3 years of experience, including internships, personal projects, and open-source contributions.
• Proficiency in at least one modern frontend framework (React, Vue, Angular, or equivalent) and one backend language (Python, Node.js, Java, Go, or equivalent).
• Solid foundations in relational databases, REST API design, Git, and collaborative software development.
• Familiarity with cloud environments, containers, and CI/CD is a plus; mobile development (React Native, Flutter) is also a welcome addition.
• Curiosity about the energy sector: you don’t need to know it already, but you need to want to understand it — along with an aptitude for using automation and AI to work smarter.
